Who can fight a ninja?

The Hunted

How many famous people in films and TV do you think have had a scrap with a ninja? Who has rapped about ninjas (quite a few people, surprisingly)? Who has become a ninja?

Tom HardyChritopher LambertLiam NeesonSean_Connery_1964

My Grasslands DJ mix includes the vocal performances of: Tom Hardy, Liam Neeson, Sean Connery, Christopher Lambert (when he isn’t beheading people he seems to have issues with ninjas), Vanilla Ice, and Luc Perry from Beverly Hills 90210 (he was a ninja once, don’t you know).

New tune ‘Dark Light’ released plus our first Music Video!!!

One of my favourite songs I have been involved in ever and a video of me being blinded by some strobe lights

No Side Effects

Tom 1 - DL Video

We are really pleased to release our brand new single Dark Light which will feature on our upcoming album. We also found time in our busy wildlife schedules to record our very first music video.

Ade 1 - DL VideoLantern Still DL - Video

Both Tom and Ade feature in the video trying to pretend to look serious while they are blinded by strobe lights and attempt to throw themselves down some staircases.

Watch the video here:

Dark Light is one of Tom and Ade’s favourite songs and Tom has gone as far as saying that it his is favourite song he has ever recorded. So it just had to be a single, didn’t it?

The B-Side includes a demo version of an album track called ‘Turn Right and You Have Reached Your Death’. This demo was recorded by Tom while in a cottage in Norfolk and was referenced in his recent blog about solitude.

Synesthetica – Radiation City (reviewed by Thomas Haynes)

Here is a review of Radiation City’s new album I wrote for Dancing About Architecture

Dancing About Architecture

radiationcity_synestheticaIt’s early on a Wednesday morning in February. I need to drive to Southampton, but the heavy rain last night has frozen solid on the windscreen, so I have to scrape the damn stuff off in a strange bubbly fashion. I get in the car and look for an album to listen to and I am drawn to the bright colours on Radiation City’s new album: Synesthetica. The mix of oranges and blues makes me think this could be a fun listen and I am not disappointed.

For those not in the know, Synesthesia is a condition when you are able to detect an additional flow of sensory information, so you might see a colour when looking at a certain number. This album plays this concept to its strength with great song titles that conjure all sorts of strange thought patterns.

The opener ‘Oil Show’ has a nice slick sound…

Ninja mixtape online

My latest DJ mix explores the legend of Japan’s mystical Ninja assassins through the lens of pop-culture and beyond. Music and samples all relate to these legendary figures of folklore. Themes of brotherhood angst and the common theme of cyber ninjas feature with clips sourced from TV, film and video games including a range of musical genres including dub step, ska, pirate rap (yes, pirate rap) and metal.

Explore some of the best and worst that music and film have to offer and learn more about the secret art of ninja.

How lonely is your solitude?

Here is a blog I wrote about loneliness and solitude for No Side Effects

IMG_0026NSEPSCTom discusses his recent thoughts on what it is like to be alone

Let’s talk about loneliness and being alone. Seriously, let’s do it now, before anyone notices. Of course if you are actually alone then maybe no one will notice anyway. I’m alone. I’m alone right now. Well, not exactly: I’m on a train. I don’t know anyone on the train so I suppose that counts.

I’m starting to spend a lot of time on my own. It isn’t that bad really, but it does take some getting use to. When I was in a relationship I use to spend a lot of time on my own too. Usually when I was doing fieldwork. That was difficult to cope with at first. I was a very homely person. All the things I use to love doing were things that I could do at home (building things, making music etc.) but…

When evil robots attack!!! DJ Mix

While I am busy at work putting together my next themed DJ Mix, I thought I would share my previous one that I mixed between the recording of Grasslands EP1 and EP2.

The DJ mix is about evil robots and features songs and clips from movies and TV.

I was really pleased that I managed to get all the dates mentioned to run in chronological order.

Before the release if this mix in 2012 I spent two weeks posting pictures of evil robots onto Facebook.

Mecha godzilla

I hope you enjoy it:

Experience a 47 minute long homage to angry robots that are hell-bent on destroying all human life.

Listen to the various references to dates when the world has succumbed to all-out robotic war (taken from TV and Film), and concluding with robots starting to act more human than we do.

Tracks in the mix include:
• Bloc Party – Talons (Acoustic Version)
• M83 – Unrecorded
• Bear In Heaven – Lovesick Teenagers
• Secret Machines – First Wave Intact (Album Version)
• Super Furry Animals – Sex, War And Robots
• The Flaming Lips – Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt.1 (Live)
• Foo Fighters – Down In the Park
• Deltron 3030 – 3030
• Doves – Last Broadcast
• Vangelis – Tears In Rain
• Kuedo – Flight Path
• Biffy Clyro – Classical Machines (Iain Cook Aereogramme Remix)

Samples Include:
• Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
• The Black Hole
• Battlestar Galactica (2004)
• Robocop
• 2001: A Space Odyssey
• Terminator 2: Judgement Day
• The Matrix
• Blade Runner

The mix was created using the Djay App for iPad in January 2012.I hope you enjoy it:

You’ll have to wait to find out what the next one is about.
